More for drugs

My fellow loyal sons and daughters of Barbados …

With effect from 1st April 2011, a dispensing fee will be administered to all prescriptions on visits to private pharmacies under the Barbados Drug Service.  This was announced by the Minister of Finance, Chris Sinckler in 2010 Budgetary Proposals.  However, prescriptions through public pharmacies and out-patient clinics are still free.

Barbados, don’t you think that drugs are expensive at the best?

What say ye?

Farewell to Auntie Olga!

My fellow loyal sons and daughters of Barbados …

Barbados’ auntie, Dame Olga Lopes-Seale passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital this morning.  Almost every 70′s and 80′s child on the island would remember listening to her Children’s Party show on the then Barbados Rediffusion, now StarCom Network, every Saturday morning, or visiting schools for special tapings of Children’s Party.

Also, she would be remembered for her charitable work with disabled and less-fortunate children, until she took ill over the past few years.

She would be greatly missed for the Barbadian Culture and landscape.  Requiescat in pace (rest in peace) Auntie Olga!

The Constituency of St. John v.4 – Foregone Conclusion

My fellow loyal sons and daughters of Barbados …

Well … well … well!!  Surprise me!  Shock me!  It was inevitable and a foregone conclusion that Marie Josephine ‘Mara’ Thompson would have won the by-election in St. John.  After the dust had settled, she had retained the DLP seat by a resounding 4,613 votes, whipping Hudson Griffith of BLP, who only managed to muster 553 votes.

According to pundits, she has done better than her late husband and former Prime Minister, David Thompson when he gain his seat after the death of Errol Barrow, also a former Prime Minister.   Ask the Nation Barbados congratulates Mrs. Thompson and we hope that she would continue to champion the causes of the people of St. John.

The Constituency of St. John v.3

My fellow loyal sons and daughters of Barbados …

Today is D-Day as they say … Today is polling day in St. John both DLP’s Mara Thompson and BLP’s Hudson Griffith are confident in winning the vacant seat left at the passing of the former Prime Minister, David Thompson (Mara’s husband).

Hudson Griffith was riding on the slogan ’52 years of neglect’  and the only words we hear from Mr. Griffith’s mouth is  ’proper representation’ in St. John … oh please!   Mara Thompson on the other hand, may seem to be the better candidate but her approach to the media, and by extension the people of Barbados left a lot to be desired.

So, we wait with bated breath!

The Year of the Barbadian Writer!

My fellow loyal sons and daughters of Barbados,  the Barbadian Diaspora and lovers of Barbados worldwide …

This year, in the year of Our Lord 2011 we declare ‘the year of the Barbadian writer’.  Over the past few years our singers, songwriters and musicians have gained popularity on the international stage.   Now is the time for our literary geniuses to get their just rewards.

We commence with a new comer to the Barbadian literary arts scene:  Cherylann Greene and her two-year old book Serenity Cove.  We are looking forward for more books and great things from this writer this year and beyond.  This romantic novel is Christian-based but don’t let the word ‘Christian’ fooled you.  This page-turner is everything and more that you would come to expect from a romance novel and has gained positive reviews around the island.

Quick Overview

Serenity Cove is set in the Caribbean, between the islands of Dominica and Barbados.  The novel’s two main characters Jonathan and Sandy met in Dominica, where Sandy was vacationing and the story continues on in Barbados.

These two people were complete opposites in terms of personality and race (still a touchy topic in Barbados).  Sandy was a young, driven, black Barbadian woman with a stubborn personality with a few insecurities and Jonathan was a very handsome, easy-going white Barbadian-Canadian man with some issues of his own.  Sandy’s friend Marky and the other exciting characters you would meet in the book is reminiscent to a box of assorted Cadbury chocolates (let your imagination go wild at that metaphor – enough said).

In addition to the link on the image above, this novel is also available in Barbados at Gospel Connections and Things Gospel stores island-wide.  Barbados, go out and show your support and telling the world how we do it ‘100% Bajan‘.

The Constituency of St. John v.2

My fellow loyal sons and daughters of Barbados …

The by-election in the constituency of St. John will be contested on 20 January 2010.   Mara Thompson has been chosen by the delegates of St. John branch of the DLP to contest the seat left vacant by her late husband, the former Prime Minister David Thompson, who represented St. John for 25 years until his passing on 23 October 2009.  Her selection has been ratified by the General Council of the DLP.  For this writer, it was a foregone conclusion that Mrs. Thompson was the logical choice to carry the DLP banner for St. John since she had been a integral part of the St. John community for some 20 years.

Hudson Griffith will be representing the BLP, also contesting for the vacant seat in the upcoming by-election.

Barbados, now that the representatives for the two parties have been chosen, who do you think will win the seat in the St. John?

What say ye?

Who next?

My fellow loyal sons and daughters of Barbados …

Okay?  So the QEH Board suspended Dr Ishmael, the personal doctor of the late Prime Minister (the reason not really important right now).  Huuummm!  What a difference two months make!

Remember?  Hartley Henry said his tenure ended when the former Prime Minister Thompson died.  Whew!  That was a mouthful!

Riddle me this, Barbados!  Who will be next to ‘resign’ or be ‘suspended’ on the list of Thompson appointees?

What say ye?
